CARBON NEUTRALITY

At the current time, the forests managed by The Navigator Company have a carbon stock, excluding carbon in the soil, of 6.1 million tons of CO2, a figure that has remained stable, while showing a downward trend, thanks to the Company’s sustainable management model. The Navigator Company was one of the first European companies to commit to carbon neutrality, in an industrial context, by 2035, some 15 years ahead of the targets set by the European Union and Portugal.

Repeated measures have enabled CO2 emissions to fall by 86%, that is, by 667 ktCO2 per year from 2018 to 2035. The remaining 107 ktCO2 of emissions will be offset.

BEST INDUSTRIAL PRACTICE ALREADY IMPLEMENTED BY NAVIGATOR:

• 90% of materials used are renewable;
• +85% recovery of waste through energy recovery, composting and incorporation into higher value products. By 2030, the goal is to raise the bar to 90%;
• +75% of the energy used is renewable – the company is also the country’s largest producer of green energy via biomass (33% of the nation’s total);
• Around 84% of the water used is returned to the environment, having been treated in line with the strictest control parameters.

THE 4 MAJOR GOALS OF THE CARBON NEUTRAL ROAD MAP ARE:

100% of electrical energy to be produced from renewable sources;
86% decrease in fossil CO2 emissions by employing cleaner technology;
10% drop in specific energy consumption by 2025*;
• Offsetting, by way of forest managed by Company or other technology, of 14% of the emissions that cannot technically be eliminated.
